A variety of quartz that gets its name from its darker grey or black crystaline appearance. Quartz which is naturally clear takes this color on and becomes this variety due to its close proximity to radioactive minerals. A silicate based mineral that was originally found in the Saxony region of Germany in a town called Schorl. Tourmalines can come in all types with various inclusions of other minerals such as jasper.  It has formed all over the world and is typically found in varieties of black.  Tourmalines are electrically charged meaning if you rub the tips you can attract particles in the air to your fingertips.  Usen in ancient times for jewelry and in the carving of statues most notably one of Alexander the Great in the 2nd or 3rd century.
